BIO
Edinburgh based trio, Free Nelson ManDoomJazz, were formed in 2011 with an aim to combine the melodic desperation of doom metal with the free form and experimentation of jazz music. Taking influences from Electric Wizard to Sun Ra, Rebecca Sneddon explores unchartered territory on the alto saxophone, backed by Paul Archibald (drums) and Colin Stewart (bass). In 2013, Free Nelson ManDoomJazz were signed to London Based Rare Noise Records and now will be touring promoting their double-EP album "The Shape of Doomjazz to Come & Saxophone Giganticus".
Free Nelson Mandoomjazz are a three-piece band formed in Edinburgh playing an experimental blend of doom metal and free jazz. Influenced principally by artists such as Black Sabbath, Electric Wizard, Sun Ra, Sonny Rollins, Albert Ayler and Wayne Shorter, they term their music doom jazz. The band formed when all three members met through playing for the same blues band. Paul Archibald (drums) and Colin Stewart (bass) started discussing musical influences, and the concept of Free Nelson Mandoomjazz was born. With the addition of Rebecca Sneddon (alto saxophone) the band recorded two EPs independently (‘The Shape of Doomjazz to come’ & ‘Saxophone Giganticus’) before signing to Rare Noise Records. The band's sound has progressed with each new recording, one notable track being Archibald's arrangement of Baroque composer Scarlatti's K54, a whirlwind composition encompassing elements of bop and heavy doom while maintaining many elements of the original. Free Nelson Mandoomjazz will be releasing new recordings of their original EPs early in 2014 followed by a brand new album later in the year which promises to show further progression and development in their sound.
